PSA Coming Soon: Keep Your Eyes Peeled!

For the last few years, many have witnessed the exponential and unprecedented growth of the global trading card market.

Old and new sellers, collectors and buyers have all had a part to play in the market boom, with eBay the go to website for buying and selling trading cards.

This growth has seen many of us revert to our childhood collections to see if they can fetch a pretty penny. For those who kept cards in a pristine condition in their youth, could now gain financially. If only we’d all had that crystal ball back then. Although, it is safe to say even if your childhood collection has some wear and tear, for the right card, it may still be worth a significant sum.

eBay recently released a report which highlights the record highs the corporation has seen from the trading card market over 2020. The article also displays key significant findings from their platform from January 2020 through to December 2020.

The trading card category has not only grown in Europe, but eBay reports a significant growth globally of 142% in 2020, with over 4 million more cards sold on eBay in comparison to the previous year.

According to eBay’s report, Pokémon Trading Cards won the popularity contest with a 574% increase in sales from 2019 to 2020. Charizard, Pikachu, MewTwo and Blastoise listed as the top 4 popular Pokémon trading card characters.

Basketball and Baseball trading cards came in a close second and third respectively in popularity.

Although Pokémon took home ‘’most popular’’ in 2020, Soccer Trading Cards took home the ‘’most improved’’ with a huge growth of 1586% in 2020.

With no sign of the bubble bursting anytime soon, what does 2021 look like for the trading card community?

According to Darren Rovell, Sports Business Analyst, unique and rare cards will continue to dominate sales. Purchasing cards with lower grades will increase in popularity and physical gaming tickets will emerge into the collectible market.

The report was a great insight into the current state of the market. For the full article head over to eBay’s news pages.
